Those of us who live in the Reno area know that winter brings snowy, icy, sometimes treacherous roads, particularly in the mountains. Many residents have an all-wheel drive or 4-wheel drive vehicle specifically to help them navigate these roads as safely as possible.
If you don't have one of these vehicles, well-fitting tire chains are essential. Be certain before you try them out on snowy, slippery roads that they are sufficiently tight. That's why safety experts recommend having survival gear and other supplies for everyone in your vehicle in case you get stranded for some time. It's a good idea to keep these items in your vehicle at all times during the winter. Even what should be a short trip could become a long one if you get stranded.
Be sure to have supplies that can help you if your vehicle or another one gets stuck in snow and ice. This includes road salt or at least sand or cat litter as well as a shovel. It's a good idea to have road flares, reflectors, cones and other items that will help make you visible to other drivers and help prevent someone from plowing into you.
It's also essential to have plenty of warm clothes for everyone, including gloves, hats, snow pants and scarves, as well as blankets. If you have to spend a night camped out in your car, these can be lifesavers.
Keep some non-perishable snacks and bottled water on hand as well. Protein bars may not be a feast, but they can keep you going until you're on your way again.
Obviously, the chances of car accidents increase in this area in winter. No matter how carefully we drive, we can't be responsible for others on the road.
