These crashes include severe impacts that have the potential to result in permanent or even fatal injury. Although head-on collisions make up less than 2 percent of reported collisions nationwide, they nevertheless cause more than 10 percent of collision deaths annually in the United States. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has found that the fatality rate in these collisions is close to 56 percent, considerably higher than other types of auto accidents.
