Speeding Drivers Cause Car Accidents

Car accident

When the COVID-19 stay at home orders first began, the roads and highways seemed eerily silent. This created an unfortunate opportunity for people to treat the open roads if they were their personal racetracks. In the late afternoon of April 30, drivers of a Ford Mustang and a Dodge Viper raced from a stoplight on Mount Rose Highway. They were reportedly traveling at 25 to 30 miles per hour over the speed limit when the Mustang’s driver lost control, resulting in 2 fatalities.

This follows a report from a week earlier, where Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Hannah DeGoey stated that they have seen “unprecedented speeds on our highways” because of uncongested roadways. This includes a driver who was ticketed for speeding across Washoe County at 112 miles per hour!

Stay Safe and Vigilant on the Road

While the roads seem safe right now, we would urge you to keep these stories in mind as cautionary tales. You may be a safe driver, but others are willing to put lives at risk. Whether it is illegal street races or drivers speeding at 140 miles per hour, excessive speeding is dangerous and causes car accidents.

If you have been the victim of a car accident and suffered an injury, you should contact an attorney. You have the legal right to seek personal injury damages against another driver whose negligence causes you harm. Every driver on the road has a duty of care to everyone else on the road. When a driver acts negligently or recklessly—like by driving at an excessive speed or street racing—they breach that duty.

A negligent driver can be held legally liable for a wide variety of damages caused by their actions. This includes medical expenses, lost wages, lost future earnings, and pain and suffering. An attorney can help you understand the value of your claim and how to pursue maximum compensation.
