Las Vegas, NV - Young Cyclist Critically Injured in Crash at Cliff Lake St & Cactus Ave

Las Vegas, NV (February 2, 2024) - On Tuesday morning, January 30, a young cyclist was injured after being hit by a car while riding a bicycle in the Las Vegas area. The incident was reported at the crossing of Cliff Lake Street and Cactus Avenue early that morning at around 7:47 a.m. Local reports indicated that a 2012 Nissan Frontier traveling northbound was stopped at a stop sign as an 11-year-old boy was riding an electric bike.

The boy entered the roadway and was hit by the Nissan as it was making a right turn. The boy was thrown from the bike and was then hit again by the pickup truck. The injured rider was transported to UMC in critical condition.

The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with responding officials. Locals say that speeding is a serious concern in the area. No further information has been provided. An ongoing investigation into the cause of the accident is in the hands of local law enforcement officials.

Our thoughts are with the injured victim and his family at this time. We hope for a full recovery.

Nevada Bicycle Accidents

Riding a bike can be a great and enjoyable way to get around. However, riders are at risk of suffering life-threatening injuries in the event of a crash. In Nevada, there were 800 cyclists killed in single-vehicle crashes in 2016. Statistics further show that 34,247 people were killed in collisions and 783 died in bicycle accidents nationwide in 2017. Nearly 71 percent of bicycle crashes take place in urban areas, where congestion makes it more likely for cyclists and cars to share the road. Statistics further show that 58 percent of cycling accidents do not take place at intersections, and only 4 percent occur in bike lanes.

When you ride a bike on the road, it requires a state of constant vigilance. This is the case even if you have the right of way or are traveling in a designated bike lane. Sadly, many drivers do not pay attention to their surroundings, and far too many cycling accidents are the result of negligence behind the wheel. Every bicycle accident is different, and you will have your own unique needs that need to be addressed as you pursue a recovery. The compensation you are able to recover will depend on many factors, including how the crash impacted your life and the severity of your injuries.
