Nevada's High Winds Bring Extra Hazards On Our Roads

Driving through Nevada's deserts, we're reminded of what a beautiful state we live in. However, when the winds whip up, as they often do, driving can be a challenge and sometimes dangerous.

SUVs, recreational vehicles, trucks and vehicles towing boats and trailers are particularly susceptible to being pushed into another lane or even flipping over. High winds also bring an increased chance of encountering debris in the road that has been blown off of someone else's vehicle, branches or even trees.

Some areas of the state are more prone to high winds than others. U.S. 395/Washoe-Pleasant Valley and the Hoover Dam bypass bridge are two examples. It's essential to heed wind warnings issued by the Nevada Department of Transportation in these areas and others. These may be on road signs and/or on the radio.

The following are some additional tips that should always be heeded, but are especially important when driving in high winds:

  • Keep both hands on the steering wheel.
  • Maintain a safe distance from other vehicles, particularly large ones or those carrying items that could fall off.
  • If dust or sand is impairing visibility, turn on your headlights.
  • If you see downed power lines, do not drive over them.
  • Avoid parking near trees or other things that could fall on your vehicle.

If you're involved in an accident during high wind conditions that was caused by someone else, you may be able to hold that driver liable in order to get needed compensation for medical care and other damages even if his or her driving was impaired by the weather conditions. An experienced Nevada personal injury attorney at Viloria, Oliphant, Oster & Aman L.L.P. can provide guidance.
